Bitcoin and Ethereum are the two largest cryptocurrencies in the world by market value. Within hours of Trump\u2019s announcement on social media, prices skyrocketed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ripple (XRP):<\/strong> +32%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solana (SOL):<\/strong> +23%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cardano (ADA):<\/strong> +63%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, initial confusion erupted as Trump did not mention Bitcoin or Ethereum in his post, causing speculation on social media. Roughly an hour later, he issued a follow-up statement to clarify their inclusion, leading Bitcoin and Ethereum to experience price jumps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bitcoin (BTC):<\/strong> +11%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethereum (ETH):<\/strong> +13%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The surge was a positive turnaround for the broader crypto market, which had lost $800 billion in total value in recent weeks, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c5a58f35-1c10-4a2f-90f0-65e8b27427ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>. Nevertheless, after Sacks said that the reserve won\u2019t \u201ccost taxpayers a dime,\u201d implying that the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/davidsacks47\/status\/1897802280738734236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government will not sell Bitcoin<\/a>, its price fell by over 5%.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"pinbox right\">\n<h3 class=\"heading\">More about Innovation<\/h3>\n<\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Experts_question_strategic_value\"><\/span>Experts question strategic value<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Analysts express skepticism about the inclusion of alternative cryptocurrencies like Ripple, Solana, and Cardano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike bitcoin\u2026these assets are more akin to tech investments,\u201d head of research at asset manager CoinShares <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-says-cryptocurrency-strategic-reserve-includes-xrp-sol-ada-2025-03-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Butterfill told Reuters<\/a>. \u201cThe announcement suggests a more patriotic stance toward the broader crypto technology space, with little regard for the fundamental qualities of these assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the fact that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/03\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-establishes-the-strategic-bitcoin-reserve-and-u-s-digital-asset-stockpile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. government<\/a> won\u2019t acquire additional assets for the Digital Asset Stockpile \u201cbeyond those obtained through forfeiture proceedings\u201d has disappointed some crypto enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo active buying means this is just a fancy title for Bitcoin holdings that already existed with the government,\u201d Charles Edwards of the Capriole Bitcoin hedge fund <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/caprioleio\/status\/1897806192053043216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, the Treasury will \u201cdevelop budget-neutral strategies for acquiring additional bitcoin, provided that those strategies impose no incremental costs on American taxpayers.\u201d This means that no U.S. dollars will be exchanged for crypto, but also leaves the door open for alternative approaches that could impact the market.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trumps_crypto_reserve_vision_months_in_the_making\"><\/span>Trump\u2019s crypto reserve vision: months in the making<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When announcing the cryptocurrencies that will be included in the reserve on Truth Social, Trump said he will \u201cmake sure the U.S. is the Crypto Capital of the World.\u201d This is a vision he has been pushing for a while. He first introduced the idea of a national crypto reserve during the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, while still on the campaign trail, and pledged to \u201ckeep 100% of all the bitcoin the U.S. government currently holds or acquires into the future,\u201d alluding to that seized by law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sacks, the U.S. currently holds about 200,000 Bitcoin, the equivalent of $18 billion, with the majority having been seized from criminals.
